I took my old cat to the vet today.

For twenty years she had been part of my life,

Then, like a dimmer switch turned down slowly

They removed the last of her light.

I drove home in silence.

My heart dank, sullen, mournful.

This is the sound of death,

The monotonous repetition that never completely disappears,

That somehow exists between the giving and taking of breath.
